Save our house

Hi, Yesterday my husband lost his job. We were barely making the house payments before he lost it- now there is no way to make them. We have been late in the last few months with our mortgage but we are caught up as of now. I don't want anymore late payments and I don't want a foreclosure. Our house is not worth anywhere near what we paid for it so selling it does not seem like the best plan. I talked to my realtor today and she said that we could consider contacting the mortgage company Washington Federal Savings- and asking for a loan deferment. Is that really possible? That would be a great help and give us time to think. Any advice?
