Default Should we pay our 2nd?

Since we know we can not afford to pay our first mortgage, but we can afford to pay our 2nd mortgage - should we continue to pay the 2nd mortgage? (The 2nd is a held by a different lender than the 1st). I am thinking we should pay it and keep it current, so that later if the house does foreclose before selling, we at least have that on our credit report is a positive - plus if there is a deficiency action, it would likely come from this mortgage holder. My husband disagrees and feels we may just be throwing more money away. What do you think? Also, if we are current with the 2nd, should I call them to let them know we are in default with Countrywide? Thanks!
